State Routes in MA
What is a state route?
A state route is a route that is generally a primary or secondary road, but some freeways exist, MA-128 for instance. Each state has its own system for numbering a road and its unique marker. The marker considered "default" is a white circle with a black sans serif number. MA, however uses a square, sometimes rounded, with a thin, black border for 1/2 digits, and an elongated, rectangular panel for 3/4 digit routes. The MUTCD says each state can choose its own marker possibly relating to the state.
